Favorite ICB beer? That’s a tough one. I love all of our beers, and I tend to drink according to season, but if I had to pick only one…….it’s definitely Tribute.
Where/when did your love of craft beer begin? I was first pushed from my comfort zone of PBR and other American industrial lagers when I moved to Japan to be an English teacher in 2003. My coworkers were from English speaking countries from all over the world and encouraged me to try beers from their homelands on our nights out after work. I had a long, sweet love affair with Guinness.
After returning to the states, my cousin Ryan Shadle told me he was homebrewing. Shortly thereafter, we had a party and he introduced me to a dizzying amount of craft beers that night. I was sold. I began seeking out as many craft beers as I could find, reading about beer, and visiting breweries. Naturally, I began homebrewing.
How did you become a part of ICB? In 2012, my wife and I moved to Greenwood from Richmond after she accepted a teaching position in Indianapolis. Unsatisfied with my professional life at the time, I decided to quit my job instead of accepting a transfer. After six months of voluntary unemployment, I grew tired of being at home all the time so I told my wife, Amy, that I was going to pursue my passion for craft beer and try to get into the brewing industry. She wholeheartedly encouraged the move. A few weeks later, I saw a tweet from Indiana City thanking volunteers for their time helping out at the brewery. I immediately e-mailed Ray and told him I’d be happy to volunteer. He welcomed me to come down and chat. We talked, I worked hard, we clicked, and after a few weeks of volunteering he offered me a job. I’ve been here ever since.
What’s your favorite ICB memory? The toast the ICB team had on the roof of the brewery on opening night. It was an amazing moment celebrating all the hard work and planning that went into making Indiana City a reality.
